PRODUCER / MIXER / ENGINEER / WRITER
“Inimitable” has been used to describe Steven Schram’s bold style of music production. Steven is an ardent believer in performance and imperfection, avoiding the sterile end result of over refinement.
A fearless approach to production and mixing and an unmistakable sonic character has yielded multiple ARIA nominations, top 10 albums, triple j hottest 100 entries and collaborations with artists such as San Cisco, Paul Kelly, Calling All Cars, Loon Lake, Clairy Brown & The Bangin’ Rackettes, Little Red, Little Birdy, Cat Empire, and Eagle and the Worm amongst many others.
As a mix engineer for hire, Steven utilises his production savvy to breathe new life into recordings. Comparisons to the bold mixes of Tchad Blake are not unfounded considering Steven spent time under the tutelage of the Grammy winner.
His experience as a radio producer and live broadcast engineer was honed over several years working at ABC radio and for triple j’s Live At The Wireless series. In 2002, The Waifs LP Up All Night, for which Steven was an engineer, notched up a total of 4 ARIA wins, and nominated for 7 awards. His reputation and far ranging experience as a live broadcast engineer was to see him mix and engineer live to air and DVD productions for Public Enemy, TISM, Wolfmother, The Casanovas, John Butler Trio, Silverchair and many more.
Steven has made it into triple j’s Hottest 100 regularly over the past several years. 2008 kicked things off with Little Red’s Coca Cola placing at #47. 2012 garnered 2 entries for his work with indie darlings San Cisco – Wild Things (#53) and Fred Astaire (#48) while 2011 saw his work on San Cisco’s Awkward land firmly in the top 10 for the year at #7. 2014’s Hottest 100 saw yet another Schram/San Cisco collaboration enter the countdown with the infectious single Run (#33).
Steven’s production on Little Birdy’s album Confetti an ARIA top 10 and certified Gold album, brought in 2 further ARIA Award nominations for Engineer of the Year and best Adult Contemporary Album in 2009.
2010 delivered yet another ARIA nomination and #3 album on the ARIA charts for The Cat Empire’s Cinema and with 2011 came a certified Platinum recording for San Cisco’s Awkward EP which also yielded a #1 single on the AIR charts.
His creative involvement has increasingly extended to co-writing with impressive results. Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes song “Love Letter” which he penned with the band, was nominated for Best Blues & Roots song at the 2013 APRA Awards and took out the highly coveted first place in the International Songwriting competition in the Adult Alternative category. The song has continued to have a stellar life of it’s own enjoying synchronisation to major international advertising campaigns for Heineken Beer and most recently for American chain JC Penney’s 2015 Super Bowl ad.
San Cisco’s impressive string of indie hits were also co-written with Steven and 2014 saw him further exercising this talent by working with emerging artists such as Kathryn Rollins whose EP Slow Traction was released in February 2015.
“He’s a bizarre guy to work with – doesn’t give a fuck about the process of recording as such, it’s all about vibing.” – Adam Montgomery- Calling All Cars – Beat March 2014
