Tony Buchen



“I arrived at the production role through being a musician and wanting to get directly to the sounds I heard in my head without having to go through a middle man.”

As former front-man and bassist for The Baggsmen, who achieved national success and recognition in Australia in the early 2000’s – Tony Buchen started out his burgeoning career by simply recording his own band. His determination to achieve the right sound for the hip-hop trio quickly had him learning the engineering trade ‘on the job’ until he felt in control of the studio and, he says started to use it as an instrument in itself.

By 2005, Tony had notched up an impressive back-catalogue of projects with artists such as Bluejuice, The Church and Blue King Brown.

Since those nascent days Tony has gone on to work with an impressive and diverse array of artists both here and abroad. His most recent projects include producing new material for breakout Australian, US based duo The Falls, producing and co-writing Jeremy Neale’s infectious ‘Swing Left’, a new and as yet unreleased track with Miami Horror, as well as Davey Lane and a raft of emerging artists including Spookyland, Jess Cerro and Iluka.

The past few years has seen Tony at the production helm of the outstanding debut EP ‘Rosie’ by Thelma Plum and the ‘Shaking Hands’ EP by highly lauded Sydney siders The Preatures. Add to this Bob Evans, Megan Washington, Phrase, Loon Lake, Gin Wigmore, Andy Bull, Ronan Keating, The John Butler Trio, Dereb the Ambassador and Old Man River, all of whom have called on Tony’s production prowess.

A masterful all rounder, Tony has also entered into the film and television realms, having recorded in Bougainville with Tim Finn for Andrew Adamson’s (Shrek/The Chronicles of Narnia/Prince of Persia) 2012 feature film ‘Mr Pip’.

Tony Buchen’s role as a producer and mix engineer extends to the international realm with his extensive work in the US and New Zealand, which over the years has seen him build great relationships with variety of studios and people, including renowned producer Bob Clearmountain (Paul McCartney, The Who, Rolling Stones, Roxy Music), members of Beck’s studio/touring band, LA mega choir Silverlake Chorus and a long standing association with the aforementioned legendary musician Tim Finn (Split Enz, Crowded House) amongst many others.

Regardless of whether the recording is digital or tape-based in nature, Tony’s penchant for vintage 60’s tube gear ensures an eclectic mix of vintage analogue mics, pre-amps, compressors and effects always make an appearance to give the sound true character. His hands-on approach to production stems from a desire to achieve the very best from the artist.

Far from just working as a producer, Tony’s background and continued work as a bass player, string arranger and live performer has been of great importance to his style of production and the experience he carries over into the studio.
