The event will feature a local line up with combined record sales exceeding 2 million and literally thousands of live shows under their belts to show you what we are made of. Brass Monkey Shows

In anticipation of the release of their next single ʻThe Lion, The Witch and Meʼ, Tigertown are excited to announce two very special Sydney shows at The Brass Monkey, Cronulla on May 23rd and May 30th.

The band are already quickly gaining a head of steam following on from the release of their debut single ʻGo Nowʼ late last year. Critically and publically praised, the track and its accompanying colourful, desert-clannish video have made Tigertown one of the countryʼs most anticipated acts for 2012. Tigertown are coming hot off the heels of their capacity-strength weekly residency at the Beresford hotel in February, and their live show is quickly turning heads. Great Results! - International Songwriting Comp

Craig Schuftan has been a busy man lately. He's spent the last two years digging Indiana Jones-style through the ruined remains of the 90's - poring over Courtney Love's old shopping lists, scouring back issues of NME, Melody Maker, Rolling Stone and Raygun, listening to hours of interviews with goateed Grunge guys and sarky Mancunian rock stars and learning the Riot Grrrl Manifesto by heart. He's delved deep into the music, the culture and the collective unconscious of the times and come up with a book unlike an other. A book that ties the stories of Britpop, Madchester, neo-punk, nu-metal, riot grrrl, Radiohead and Rage Against the Machine together. That tells the tale of alternative music on both sides of the Atlantic from 1990 to 2000, from Sonic Youth's major label debut, through the rise and fall of Grunge and Britpop, right up to Radiohead's Kid A. Steven Schram:

Steven has been about as flat out as a producer can get in recent times with a schedule literally exploding with work. Last year finished on a massive high for Steven who hit #1 on the indie charts for 5 weeks and #3 most played on triple j with San Cisco's single Awkward, not to mention Tin Pan Orange tearing up the airwaves with Barcelona and The Vasco Era's self titled 3rd studio album meeting critical acclaim from all corners.

An incredible psychedelic mega freak out mash-up of Eagle and The Worm's All I know was released featuring the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble from NYC and Milwaukee based rapper Juiceboxxx and was played in all it's glory (8 minutes and 31 seconds) on 2011 with Richard Kingsmill. You have to check it out! 2012 shows no signs of slowing down for Steven - San Cisco's Awkward hit #7 on triple j's hottest 100 of 2011, The Vasco Era took out top spot in the ToneDeaf reader's poll for Album of the Year and Clairy Brown and the Bangin' Racketts scored Album Of The Year from ABC Radio National. Speaking of which, have a listen to their latest track "Love Letter" it's a cracker!

Jimi Maroudas:

Jimi's recently spent 5 weeks through February and March at Sing Sing Studios in Melbourne working with Darwin-based 5 piece Worldfly. Having toured extensively through Australia and overseas, particularly in Europe, Worldfly and Jimi were both determined to make an amazing record to follow up their acclaimed 2009 debut. "While we spent 5 weeks in Sing Sing, the process actually started about 8 months earlier." Jimi explains. "All in all we did about 2 to 3 weeks of pre-production over the course of two trips to Darwin." The whole band was recorded at Sing Sing studios, with what Jimi describes as a 'dense' style of production which was achieved through the use of an 8 piece string section and a 4 piece horn section to create thick, layered sounds. They may have been chasing a deeply layered production style, but Jimi was always conscious about focusing on the importance of melodies and vocals. "They are amazing songwriters and vocalists so I really wanted that to shine through". Jimi also explained how everyone recognized how important it was to get the right sonic qualities onto the record every step of the way.

"We were really fastidious about sounds. We made sure at every step the right mic was on the right amp. We spent a lot of time on each instrument, whether it be drums, vocals or working out what guitar tone would be the right one for each part, and how it was all going to come together as a whole."

After such an epic session how did everyone come away from the project? "We all left totally exhausted but thoroughly satisfied!" says Jimi. We really look forward to hearing the results!

Emmy Bryce, who recently released her debut EP "Seven Days" which was produced by Jimi has embarked on a co-headline tour with Kate Vigo entitled "Hunter and Gatherer" through QLD, NSW, VIC and SA. Get along and check out a show! To whet your appetite, Emmy recently performed 'Infinity and Eternity' on The Circle on Channel 10 which you can check out here.

In other news, Tasmanian band Small City Lights have found themselves in the finals of Australia's Got Talent on the back of their track "Set Fire To The Room" , which appears on their brand new EP which was produced, mixed and recorded by Jimi and mastered by Steve Marcussen in LA. You can check them out on their triple j Unearthed page right here, and keep an eye out for them on TV over the coming weeks!

Finally, as Kimbra keeps going from strength to strength over in the US, a nice little surprise arrived in Jimi's letterbox this week! Check it out:

Jimi was awarded an ARIA for his work on Kimbra's 'Cameo Lover', which snared her the ARIA for Best Female. This is Jimi's second ARIA award, his first was for his work on Bertie Blackman's Secrets and Lies which won Best Independent Release in 2009!

Andy Lawson:

Andy has been working with country music artist "Polly" on a new EP which will be his first foray into the genre and has recently taken a trip over to Melbourne to work with producer Chris Cheney on a project at Red Door Sounds, a Collingwood based studio which contains an SSL G+ Series console with Neve 1073 pre-amp/eq's and 9098 series compressors which Andy has dubbed simply as "pretty damn cool indeed..."

You can bet that in a studio, somewhere, right now someone is going on about "The Neve sound" and the 1073 Mic preamp and 3 band EQ, originally launched in 1970 and still hand-built to this day in Burnly, England is often regarded as the essence of this sound. You can find out more about it here, and check out the impressive Red Door Sound studio while you're at it!

In addition to this, Andy has also been putting the finishing touches on Perth-based Sam Carmody's upcoming EP, who's Indie/Folk stylings has received some positive attention on triple j, with presenter Caroline Tran remarking: "[His] influences shine through and so does his very strong songwriting...worth hearing on the radio!" Keep an ear out for Sam Carmody and his upcoming EP which is due to be released soon!

This week Andy will be working on an EP he's been looking forward to for a while - with Perth based band Mezzanine. He'll be delving back into the 90's for some authentic grungy sounds and inspiration. We'll bring you some more info on that project as it develops. Following that it'll be into Scotch of Saint James who are spending a month at Debaser Studios crafting an album. "I'm sure we will come out with something very special" says Andy, so we'll be looking forward to hearing the results of that!

He's also had a brand new sign made for Debaser Studios:

Q: Have you got any new equipment or tricks you've been utilizing in the studio lately?

A: I've been using my UBK Fatso (or normal Fatso) without any of the compression settings engaged...so it's just going through the warmth circuit..great for parallel on the drums.

Q: What have you been listening to?

A: Just fixed my record player, so mainly all vinyl..but these two have been getting a flogging: Bowie - Modern Life (just the A-side really, so good), Sleepy Jackson - Lovers (the record has miniskirt on it too). Also just bought the New Black Keys Record - El Camino some pretty cool sounds on this one. -AL

Tony Buchen:

March 22 ~

"Intense week at Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studios in Auckland working on the Mr Pip film with Tim Finn. We watched a cut at the director’s house - in his private cinema no less - and I was so moved. Even after watching various scenes hundreds of times while working on the music. A good sign. Beautiful studio by the way. A true artist’s haven put together with care by someone who understands the recording process as a creative endeavor."

March has been a very busy time indeed for Tony, with much of it spent at Neil Finn's Roundhead Studios in Auckland, working with Tim Finn on the Mr. Pip film and also on some recording with Neil, Tim and Elroy Finn. What a way to spend a month! Whilst there he came across a very nice, super-rare piece of equipment:

"This super rare Pye compressor seriously turned me on. In addition to being full of classic character and aggressive English soccer-thug charm, it features a super un-subtle 'noisegate' that shut off the signal with a harsh clip. It made a lightly played beat with brushes sound like a Jay Dilla beat." - TB

Without having time to catch his breath Tony delved headfirst into April, working with Major Tom & The Atoms and pre-production and recording with Loon Lake for their upcoming album, which we're sure to hear more about in the coming weeks.

After last year's success of Melbourne 2-piece Big Scary's debut LP "Vacation" (which scored a triple j album of the week for November 2011) and Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire!'s single "Panther Shrine" Gareth is back in the studio with the Adelaide 6-piece to complete work on 2 upcoming singles. They are in the final stages of vocal tracking and mixing and we'll bring you more information on them as it becomes available in the coming weeks.

Mick Glossop

Mick has recently been engaged in recording a track for an exciting multimedia project entitled "Founders and Survivors" which is currently being produced by Tasmanian company Roar Film for the ABC. The multi-faceted broadcast and online project springs from one of the world’s great historical studies of immigration, forced labour and settlement. The Founders & Survivors database follows 72,000 convict men and women over five generations to build a unique portrait of modern society in the making and amongst many other features, includes music of acclaimed singers and songwriters from Australia, UK, Canada and Ireland - one song of which will be "Godforsaken Voyage", performed by Phil Odgers from UK folk/punk group"The Men They Couldn't Hang" and produced by Mick Glossop. The track was was recorded in Mick's London studio. You can check out the Founders & Survivors site here and stay tuned for more information as it comes to hand.

"Console" - Issue #6

Introducing \| Tony Buchen PRODUCER/MIXER/ENGINEER/ARRANGER/SONGWRITER *“I arrived at the production role through being a musician and wanting to get directly to the sounds I heard in my head without having to go through a middle man.”* As former front-man and bassist for The Baggsmen, who achieved national success and recognition in the early 2000’s - Tony Buchen started out his burgeoning career by simply recording his own band. His determination to achieve the right sound for the hip-hop trio quickly had him learning the engineering trade ‘on the job’ until he felt in control of the studio and, he says started to use it as an instrument in itself. In those early days, while Tony was recording some of his projects as a producer at Sydney’s now defunct Electric Avenue studios, former owner and legendary engineer Phil Punch provided some guidance: “He was an informal mentor to me from the engineering perspective, showing me the 'Abbey Road' school of engineering: learning how to use gear properly, then breaking every rule possible to create original textures and sounds.” By 2005, Tony had notched up an impressive back-catalogue of projects with artists such as Bluejuice, The Church and Blue King Brown. Since that time, Tony’s experience as a musician and skills as a producer have continued to resonate with the broad spectrum of artists he has worked with and his career has gone from strength to strength. Recent projects include mixing John Butler’s ‘Live At Red Rocks’ (2011 ARIA Nomination), producing an EP for NZ artist Gin Wigmore which has been met with a stellar reception there (certified Platinum, released on Motown label in the US), scoring a spot in triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2010 with ‘Dog’ by Andy Bull {feat. Lisa Mitchell} and receiving critical acclaim for his work with Melbourne hip-hop artist Phrase, who’s new album ‘Babylon’ eschews pre-fabricated beats and sampling for scratch-made, live tracks with 60’s garage rock and 70’s soul stylings. Lately, Tony has been hard at work in the studio with cinematic art/rock group WIM, a brand new indie/vintage-soul band The Preachers from Sydney (both recorded by Tony in LA) and a score for new film from director Andrew Adamson (Shrek/Chronicles of Narnia/Prince of Persia) entitled ‘Mr. Pip’ which was recently recorded in Bougainville with Tim Finn. The Preachers - 'Take A Card' (produced by Tony Buchen at The Bank Studios in Burbank, LA.) Tony Buchen’s role as a producer and mix engineer extends to the international realm with his extensive work in the US as well as New Zealand, which over the years has seen him build great relationships with variety of studios and people, including renowned producer Bob Clearmountain (Paul McCartney, The Who, Rolling Stones, Roxy Music), members of Beck's studio/touring band and long standing association with legendary musician Tim Finn (Split Enz, Tim Finn Band) amongst many others. “I like producers that have something to say, rather than just straight up engineer a record. I do a lot of string and horn arrangements and my records so I naturally love producers like Jon Brion and Ethan Johns. Nigel Godrich is incredible and I respect the discipline of his approach - always very pure and never throwing too many ideas into a 3 minute track. I've been very fortunate to have worked with musicians in LA who do a lot of work with these guys and have learnt a lot from their experiences.” Regardless of whether the recording is digital or tape-based in nature, Tony’s penchant for vintage 60’s tube gear ensures an eclectic mix of vintage analogue mics, pre-amps, compressors and effects always make an appearance to give the sound true character. His hands-on approach to production stems from a desire to achieve the very best from the artist. “Generally I'm a very involved and engaged producer, but always trying to draw the best out of the musicians and feature the basic essence of what they're trying to say as a musician, rather than imposing another approach on them”. Far from just working as a producer, Tony’s background and continued work as a bass player and live performer has been of great importance to his style of production and the experience carries over into the studio. *“I think being a musician and performer has helped me to see things from the recording artist's perspective. I know the feeling when your heart rate goes up during a particular section of a song and what that can do the way you play your instrument. Hey Cats.

I'm writing again. I'm very excited to be too.

In early January of this year, I sequestered myself into the Lola room at Bakehouse. A very cool space that looks out onto a busy road. It was nice at night to look out onto all the cars whizzing past, making streams of colour with their headlights and shadows on the wall. A good backdrop for the sounds I was making.

I spent about 2 weeks in there writing and got a fair clutch of songs in my pocket. I got round to recording a couple of them in full too on my new ProTools stuff (which I still have so much to learn about!).

Then I ended up in Sydney and spent a couple of weeks writing in a nice little studio right near the heart of the city. There were lots of white walls, warm old brick and wood paneling. I was using a different guitar too, a Telecaster (which is one of the few guitar models I like besides my trusty Gibson SG). I think it's good for me to use other people’s guitars. Sometimes it's good to get out of my comfort zone and not be too attached to doing songwriting only one way or on one type of instrument. Sometimes I even feel like I've sucked my own guitars dry and I need to leave them alone so that they can 'refuel'.

There was piano in the studio too which I used to do some writing on - and a neat little Fender Jazz bass that I used in one session. I did some very late nights in there and got a few full songs and a fair few sketches of ones. Sometimes after a session I'd walk into the city and have a late night snack. That was a nice ritual.

I'm back in Melbourne now, writing in St Kilda. Somehow it's worked out that I've found myself with opportunities to write in different spaces, which is a first for me for a record. It'll be interesting to see what keeps coming out. So far I'm pretty pleased.

So, right now I'm in the process of recording demos for a lot of them and then getting the rest of the sketches and ideas into some sort of shape ready for demoing too. I shall be back with more reportage soon.

Baggage allowance lifted for travelling musicians

Thanks to initiatives brokered by the Association of Artist Managers (AAM), AMIN and others, 2 major Australian airlines have now made it easier for musicians to travel.

Virgin Australia have taken big steps to be the first in the industry to offer an extra baggage allowance for travelling musicians, up to 32kg across 3 pieces with a further 32kg able to be purchased for just $15 in advance, as well as the ability to pool baggage and equipment across the travelling party.

Today, QANTAS has announced an initiative offering an extra checked item to a total of 46kg, or 64kg for QANTAS Club members. As with Virgin, excess baggage allowances need 48 hours notice to be booked and will also allow for pooling of items across the travelling group.

Growing up in suburban Melbourne I would amuse myself by making lists and mixed tapes.

Around the age of 10 I started to make mixed video tapes - yes, at that time we're talking tape of the VHS kind! One most prized of these VHS tapes was a more long term project I embarked upon which ended up being a three hour music video montage of everything I obsessed over both in music and on video at the time.

It took me forever to do, but I would watch over constantly till inevitably the tape wore thin and the picture quality was unwatchable.

I can remember much of what was on it, some of which is horrifying in retrospect but admittedly all that has shaped my varied tastes musically.

Below is one of the many vids I'll be posting over the next few weeks that featured on this compilation tape.

Loving music for music's sake is a wonderful thing!

After two successful EPs and touring nationwide over the last couple of years The Chemist have written and almost recorded their debut album. Now for the first time the band is set to step out with a set that incorporates all their dark, quirky and brooding new material to give a taste of what's to come in 2012. It all kicks off at The Bird in Perth on Feb 23 and then on March 2 at The Fly Trap (Fly By Night) in Freo!
